On 5th June, The Environment Society of India celebrated World Environment Day
On 5th June, The Environment Society of India celebrated World Environment Day by spreading awareness against single use plastics at Chandigarh, as the theme for 50th anniversary of World Environment Day is “Beat plastic pollution”.
The members of Environment Society of India, Students and faculty of Chandigarh University and students and teachers of Bhavan Vidyalaya and St. Anne’s Convent School, St Mary School Chandigarh, Gurukul Global World School, Mohali, Shishu Niketan School Chandigarh, Students and volunteers of NSS unit Panjab University, Chandigarh gathered at Sector 43 Apni Mandi to interact with the shopkeepers and customers at the mandi.
Chancellor of Chandigarh University, Mr. Satnam Singh Sandhu was the special guest of the event and participated in the rally walking along with the school children.
Posters and banners displayed in the venue spread the awareness to stop using plastics. A pledge to stop pollution was taken by all present at the event. Participants discussed about various alternatives of plastic bags.
Mr. N K Jhingan, the secretary of the society briefed about the harmful effects of single use plastics and requested the customers and shopkeeper present on the occasion to refuse/don’at keep single use plastic carry bags and bring cloth bags along when come for shopping it will not only help you’re your atmosphere clean and green but also help in protecting your and animals life and health. Mr Surinder Verma Chairman, Citizen’s Awareness Group also spoke on the occasion. Mr Rahi read out the poem highlighting ill-effects of plastics and the use of cloth bags while shooing. Some other prominent dignitaries present were, Dr. Ravinder Nath Treasurer ESI, Ms. Preeti Kapany Jt. Secretary. ESI., Mr S K Singla Principal Govt Model Sr. Sec School, Raipur Khurd, Vijay Paul Goel, Mr. Rohan President youth wing of the Society, Mr. Anup Sarin, Mr. Hem Raj Satija, Ms. Parmajeet, Ms. Neena Pundir and Sudha Malik, S Parminder Singh Kapany, Ms Rajni and Mr. Aman an water expert.
