Chandigarh,18th April,2023.
On the occasion of World Heritage Day Government Museum and Art Gallery organized an exhibition of photographs titled “Tender Concrete”
The exhibition showcased sixteen back and white photographs of Brutalist Architecture from iconic buildings: some of them being Tower of Shadows, Museum and Art Gallery, Mill Owners’ Association Building, Institute of Indology, Indian Institute of Management, National Institute of Immunology and Panjab University. Thus architectural details from the works of well known architects Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Raj Rewal and Balkrishna Doshi have been beautifully captured by highlighting the interplay of light and shadow.
As quoted by the artist “I am not among those left aghast by Brutalism. Quite the contrary: concrete, when handled by the greatest architects, has always seemed tender to me. It allows for sensual and dizzying curves, the alternation of empty and full, a plunge into solitude and reverie.” He further adds that concrete allows for a constant musical tension: rectangle contrasts with curve, sharp edges with softened profiles, static with fluid, rest with movement: this is seen no where better than in Chandigarh.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Dharam Pal, IAS, worthy Adviser to the Administrator and his Excellency Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador from France to India.
The exhibition is on view in Great Hall of the Government Museum and Art Gallery till 30 June.
