8th International Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) Course and CME on Reversal of NCDs to commence *tomorrow

PGIMER, Chandigarh, AIIMS New Delhi and World NCD Federation, in partnership with World Health Organization, are jointly conducting the 8th International course on Public health approaches to Non Communicable Diseases from 2-6th March 2023, that will be followed by the 8th International CME on 7th March, 2023, celebrated as Foundation day of World NCD Federation.
This year, the theme of CME is “Reversal of Non-Communicable Diseases: Facts or Myths?”.
The course has already completed seven editions at International, regional and national level, the 8th edition is being undertaken this year, with representation from India, Nepal, Botswana and Bangladesh. Till date, about 260 participants which includes Programme managers at state and district level, faculty from Medical colleges, post graduate community medicine students, and public health professionals from almost every state of India and different regions of the world have been trained in these courses.
This year, approximately 80 participants from various nationalities are attending the course and 150 in the CME.
Prof RK Ratho, SubDean, PGIMER and WHO representatives to India, will be present during the course inauguration ceremony on 2nd March 2023.
The experts for delivering the course are from across the globe including Dr Pradeep Joshi and Dr. Atreyi Ganguli from WHO, Prof Brian Oldenburg from La Trobe University Australia, Dr. Rajiv Saran, USA, and Dr. Susheel Sharma from USA. The course participants will represent a blend of Additional directors, state program officers and district program officers in the NCD program.
Apart from these managerial professionals, public health experts and students from various states have also registered for this course.
The course consists of 11 modules focusing on the burden, determinants and impact of NCDs; Global, regional and national initiatives; public health interventions to tackle NCDs; multi-sectoral actions and integration for NCD management; Strengthening Primary health and people centered care in NCDs; health system strengthening; Continuum of Care for NCDs; Monitoring, Surveillance and Evaluation; Building Robust National NCD Programmes; Implementation research in NCDs and emerging NCDs and newer initiatives.
Three to four lectures per module will be delivered by eminent speakers followed by faculty and participant interaction during the discussion sessions. Keynote speakers from across the world are invited to deliver their expertise in the NCD management. As a social responsibility of the organizers of the course towards the tricity and City beautiful of Chandigarh, a Public forum on the title “Swaasthya Samwaad for swasth, nashamukt aur shreshth Bhaarat” will be conducted on 6th March from 4 to 5 pm, open for general public and patients.
Like every year since 2015, Foundation Day Walkathon themed as “Walk your way towards millets and healthy lifestyle” is also being organized on 7th March from 6-7 AM to promote physical activity and Yoga, and to encourage interaction of CME participants and speakers and tricity to increase awareness about NCDs and its preventive factors among general public. Millet Mela and Poster display to promote International Year of Millets 2023 are going to be the innovative attraction during the CME.
Prof. Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER will be present to grace the inauguration session in the CME. Shri Manoj Ahuja from Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India has also been invited for the inauguration. An official launch of promotional video under Operation Millets, by World NCD Federation, will also take place during the inauguration, dedicated to contribute in the success of International Year of Millets 2023. The speakers in the CME will focus on the discussion on evidence about reversal of non-communicable diseases and role of diet and millets in the their prevention, control and management. The CME will give new insights in terms of novel research ideas in the field of public health and promote research around millet and diet-based management and reversal on non-communicable diseases.
