PSYDERMCON 2024: Addressing the Intersection of Skin and Mind
The upcoming PSYDERMCON 2024, second annual conference of psychodermatology Association of India, scheduled for December 6-7, 2024, at PGIMER Chandigarh, will spotlight the vital yet often underappreciated connection between dermatological conditions and mental health. This landmark conference, themed “Uniting Skin and Mind,” will bring together leading experts in Dermatology, Psychaitry and Psychology to discuss innovative strategies for managing the psychosocial impact of skin diseases and establishing integrated care models.
Skin conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and acne extend far beyond their physical symptoms. They often lead to significant psychological challenges, including depression, anxiety, and poor self-esteem. By addressing these dual aspects of disease, psychodermatology offers a holistic approach to improving patient care and quality of life.
Highlights of the conference include:
Plenary Session on the Psychosocial Impact of Skin Diseases by Dr. M. Ramam.
Symposiums on psychodermatology issues in children and mental health in patients with neglected tropical diseases like leprosy, leishmaniasis, mycetoma .
Workshops on mindfulness, relaxation therapy, and habit reversal therapy for dermatology patients.
Key discussions on managing psychiatric comorbidities in conditions like alopecia, trichotillomania, and hyperpigmentary disorders.
Dr. Tarun Narang and Dr. Shubhmohan Singh, key organizers of the event, emphasized the urgent need to establish psychodermatology clinics across healthcare institutions. “Psychodermatology is the future of holistic skin care. These clinics bridge the gap between dermatology and psychiatry, allowing healthcare providers to address both physical symptoms and psychological distress effectively,” they said.
PSYDERMCON 2024 is set to host over 40 expert speakers and feature a robust scientific program, including panel discussions, case studies, and interactive workshops. The conference aims to build awareness, foster collaboration, and drive the integration of mental health services into dermatology practice.
