Sanskrit dept. held an event to celebrate the beginning of Vikrami Samvat 2080
Keeping the tradition alive, Panjab University’s Sanskrit department celebrated the traditional Indian new year, Vikrami Samvat 2080, today at the department. Poetry recitals, singing and dance performances by the students and research scholars were a part of the event. Along with these, lectures on the ancient Indian concept of time were given by the faculty members of the department.
Prof. V. K. Alankar, Academic Incharge of PU’s Sanskrit department, said in his speech, “when the world was beginning to read and write, ancient Indian scholars had begun studying the concept of time and developing it in the form of astronomy and so forth.” Dr. Shivaji Pandey gave a detailed lecture on the ancient Indian concept of time and discussed the various scales of time which exist beyond the human comprehension. Dr. Vikram recited poetry on this occasion. Dr. Satyan Sharma recited Sanskrit verses which he briefly and comprehensively stated the various philosophical concepts of time prevalent in the ancient Indian tradition. Mr. Vijay Bharadwaj, in his vote of thanks, thanked and congratulated the Academic Incharge, faculty members, office staff and all the participants.
Students and research scholars of PU’s Sanskrit department and Dayanand Chair for Vedic Studies participated in the event.
