Another Milestone Accomplished;
PGIMER’s Department of Otolaryngology performs the first ever Auditory Brainstem Implant in this part of the Country
PGIMER added another major milestone to its already accomplished profile, as Department of Otolaryngology embarked on the auditory brainstem implant program with the first child being operated on Monday, 29th August 2022, the first ever Auditory brainstem implant in this part of the country.
Detailing about the complex surgery, Dr. Naresh Panda Head of the Department of Otoalryngology, PGIMER stated, “The Department has been running a successful cochlear implant program for the past 19 years. However, the auditory brainstem implantation is indiacted in those patients in whom the cochlea and the cochlear nerve are either absent or not functioning well. In adults, auditory brainstem implant surgery is performed on individuals after removing bilateral acoustic neuromas in whom both the auditory nerves may not be functional. The auditory brainstem implant bypasses the cochlea and the cochlear nerve, and the implant is placed in the brainstem.”
This complex surgery was performed by a team of professionals comprising Dr. Naresh Panda (ENT), Dr Pravin Salunke (Neurosurgery), Dr. Sanjay Munjal, and Dr. Parul Sud (Audiology) and Dr. Nidhi Panda and Dr. Babita Ghai (Anesthesia) from PGIMER, under the supervision of Prof. Mohan Kameshwaram, Prof. M C Vasudevan, and Prof. Ranjith Rajeswaran from Chennai. Dr. Kameshwaram and Dr. Vasudevan have a large experience of performing auditory brainstem Implant surgeries in the country.
