UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF APPLIED MANAGEMENT SCIENCES, PANJAB UNIVERSITY in collaboration with the Cybercrime Investigation Cell Chandigarh Police organized a seminar on Cybercrime awareness. The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Y.P. Verma, Registrar, Panjab University. Key speakers at the event were Mr. Vikas Sangwan (Cybercrime expert), and ASI Gulab Singh (Chandigarh Cybercrime branch). Prof. Monika Aggarwal, Director, UIAMS extended the formal welcome.
The event commenced with address by Prof. Y.P. Verma, in which he guided students about the financial losses happening due to cybercrime and emphasizing the importance of awareness regarding the potential cyber threats. He also advised students to use secure networks such as HTTPS to surf the internet.
Mr. Vikas Sangwan was the next to address. He apprised students about increasing financial fraud in online games. He suggested students not keep common passwords like names, date of birth, etc. rather use strong passwords that include alphanumeric characters, case sensitive, symbols, etc. He also advised not to add unknown persons to your friend lists on social media platforms, shop only from reputed websites, always take customer care numbers only from authentic websites, and verify the receiver before doing an online financial transaction.
ASI Gulab Singh advised students not to use public Wi-Fi and not to give hotspots to unknown persons. “Beware of the lottery scams which are prevalent these days”, he added.
Cybercrime experts also added that in case of fraud, immediately contact the helpline number 1930. For complaining scams regarding Instagram, take screenshots, and regarding Facebook, copy the URL. At the end of the seminar, a question-answer session was also held to address the student’s doubts.
