Panjab University, Chandigarh: To celebrate International Mother Language Day 2022, the office of Dean International Students, Panjab University, organized an offline meeting of its international students residing in Chandigarh with the Dean, Prof. Deepti Gupta. The meeting was held at the DIS office on 21st February 2022 from 10 am to 1 pm.
International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. Prof. Deepti Gupta who is a linguist said that the meeting was organized to make the international students feel at ease, especially as there has been limited interaction with the students due to the pandemic and to celebrate International Mother language Day. Also, the knowledge of difference in culture and language fosters forbearance and respect for others. Another important reason for organizing this meeting was to discuss any issues that the students might be facing like Visa problems, Financial issues etc. and to help them resolve those. Since the students are far from their home country, it becomes Panjab University’s responsibility to forge a safe and reliable environment for them, where they will be taken care of.
As the new Dean of International Students, it was Prof. Gupta’s first offline interaction with the students. The students opened up regarding their struggles and concerns, the homesickness they felt and how they coped with it. During the gathering, a lot of solutions were discussed for the issues that the students face. As a result of the meeting, cum get together many new friendships were made. A game was played in which all the students spoke a sentence in their language, and wrote it on the whiteboard. The meeting ended with some refreshments and lots of fun and laughter.
