Concludes with a Clarion Call for Collaborative Action in Gastrointestinal Oncology

Underscores Lifestyle Management as the Unsung Hero in the Fight Against Gastrointestinal Cancers

The Ist ever Gastrointestinal Oncology Society (GIOS) Conference 2024 drew to a close, marking a pivotal moment for healthcare professionals dedicated to advancing the field of gastrointestinal oncology. Over the past three days, the conference gathered esteemed experts from diverse disciplines, facilitating a comprehensive exchange of insights, innovative research, and best practices aimed at improving patient outcomes in gastrointestinal cancers.

Speaking at the Valedictory Session, Prof. Rakesh Kapoor, the Organising Chairman , articulated a strong message regarding collective responsibility in combating these malignancies. “As we conclude GIOS 2024, it becomes evident that the fight against gastrointestinal cancers is not just about individual specialties—it’s about how we, as a community of healthcare providers, can collaborate effectively. Together, we can create a more robust support system for our patients, guided by shared knowledge and coordinated strategies.”

Prof. Kapoor also emphasized the increasing recognition of holistic methods in managing cancer as he stated, “Our discussions around diet, yoga, exercise, and spirituality underscored a vital truth: that preventing gastrointestinal cancers is a multidimensional endeavor. It requires not just medical innovation but also a cultural shift in how we view health and wellness. Communities must be engaged actively in this conversation, and together we can effect meaningful change.”

Expressing her gratitude to all speakers, moderators, and participants for making GIOS 2024 a resounding success, Dr. Divya Khosla, the Organising Secretary stated, “The engagement from attendees reinforced the conference’s role as a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration in addressing the pressing issues in gastrointestinal oncology.

The conference had an array of diverse sessions highlighting critical issues such as the importance of palliative care, the role of gut microbiome, the influence of nutrition on quality of life, and the latest advancements in treatment modalities, including immunotherapy and artificial intelligence applications in oncology. Each session was meticulously designed to foster discussion, encourage multidisciplinary collaboration, and enhance understanding of complex challenges in the field. Among the galaxy of speakers included the doyens of international repute like Dr Jutarop Phetcharaburanin Khon Kaen University Thailand and many others.

Dr. Khosla further elaborated, “The conference also featured a quiz competition aimed at reinforcing knowledge and fostering camaraderie among participants, which was well-received. The vibrancy of this event highlighted the commitment of healthcare professionals to both their field and to lifelong learning as they brought forth their perspectives, highlighting the importance of integrated approaches in managing this challenging disease.”
