GIOS 2024 Kicks Off at PGIMER: Global Oncology Experts Unite to Tackle Gastrointestinal Cancer

The prestigious Global International Oncology Summit (GIOS) 2024 kicked off today at PGIMER Chandigarh, attracting renowned national and international experts in gastrointestinal oncology. The summit, known for its pivotal discussions on advancements in cancer treatment, commenced with a focus on Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) and witnessed an impressive lineup of sessions that covered the latest research, clinical practices, and multidisciplinary approaches in oncology.

The inaugural workshop was opened by **Prof. Vivek Lal, DIrector PGIMER **setting a high tone for the event. With an engaging mix of presentations and interactive sessions, Day 1 brought together thought leaders from across the globe to discuss cutting-edge treatment options, share insights on recent breakthroughs, and address the complexities surrounding gastrointestinal cancers.

Among the galaxy of speakers who deliberated through the day included Padrma Shri Prof. Yogesh Chawla, former Director, PGIMER, Dr Seema Arif from Cadriff, UK, Dr. Reena Engineer., Vice President, Mumbai, Dr Rahul Krishnatry, Secretary, Mumbai, Dr Ajay Deseja, Head, Deptt. of Hepetology, PGIMER, Dr Naveen Kalra from DEptt. of Radiodiagnosis, PGIMER to mention a few.

Detailing about the day’s proceedings, Prof. Rakesh Kapoor, Organoising Chairman stated, “The day began with an insightful session on the Epidemiology and Role of Radiology in Diagnosing HCC, deliberating emerging patterns and recent advancements in imaging techniques, emphasizing how shifts in epidemiological data influence treatment protocols.

Prof. Kapoor further elaboateed, “One of the most significant discussions of the day focused on Staging and Surgical Management of HCC, with expert presentations highlighted the importance of biomarker research and patient-specific surgical approaches, reflecting the summit’s commitment to individualized patient care.

Dr. Divya Khosla . Organising Secretary, throwing light on the focused sessions, stated, “Later sessions delved into Liver-Directed Therapies, with covering innovative ablative and endovascular approaches. The potential of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) as an effective liver-directed therapy was reviewed in depth, showcasing its promising results and future potential in managing HCC cases, shared Prof. Kapoor..

As the summit continued, the session on Hypofractionation and SBRT’s Role in HCC sparked considerable interest, with **Dr. Ashu Abhishek and Dr. Divya Khosla exploring innovative approaches to address tumor thrombosis and optimize treatment outcomes through SBRT.

The day concluded with a comprehensive workshop on Contouring and Planning Tips for Treatment Execution. Faculty experts, led hands-on demonstrations, providing attendees with advanced insights into immobilization, target delineation, and quality assurance in treatment planning.,
