Chandigarh, 1st October 2024: National Voluntary Blood Donation Day was commemorated at the Government Multispecialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, Chandigarh, with a special event to recognize and honour organizations that have played a key role in organizing blood donation camps. The event was organized by the Blood Centre, GMSH-16, and highlighted the importance of voluntary blood donation in saving lives.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating 20 years of giving: Thank You, Blood Donors!”, focused on the gratitude and recognition of those who have selflessly donated blood over the years. The event was graced by Dr. Suman, Director Health & Family Welfare, U.T. Chandigarh, as the Chief Guest, along with Dr. K.S. Bal, Medical Superintendent, and Dr. Parmjit Singh, Deputy Medical Superintendent.

In her address, Dr. Suman emphasized the critical role of voluntary blood donation in ensuring a reliable and safe blood supply for patients in need. She appreciated the humanitarian efforts of the organizations that conduct regular blood donation camps for the Blood Centre. Some of the prominent organizations honoured at the event included the Sant Nirankari Mission, Shree Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust, Vishvas Foundation, Baba Moti Ram Mehra Khoon Daan Society, and Nishkam Sewak Jatha.

During a special campaign held from 17th September to 1st October 2024, 487 units of blood were collected, with efforts also made to register new donors. Momentoes and appreciation certificates were presented to the organizers in recognition of their unwavering support.

The event also underscored the need for a steady supply of safe blood donors and regular blood donation camps, which are essential for treating patients with severe anemia, cancer, thalassemia, and other life-threatening conditions.

All attendees took a pledge to continue donating blood and raising awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation. Informative materials were distributed to further educate the public on the significance of this life-saving act.
