Series of Events organised to Promote “Love for Library and Reading”
under P.N. Panicker National Reading Day
Under the National Reading Month celebrations, three events were organised by the Readers Club, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Sector 32, Chandigarh. The first was the ‘Selfie with a Book’ campaign, which attracted social media coverage, the second was the Online Essay Writing Competition, and finally, the Book Discussion on Mapping Ethical Turn Through Indian Tales: Life, Work and Thought by Dr Meenu A Gupta from Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Principal Dr Ajay Sharma, speaking at inaugural speech of event, reiterated the importance of Indian folktales and the need to return to our ethical values. He also commended the Readers Club for consistently organising events to celebrate National Reading Day and Month every year. Dr Amandeep Kaur from Department of History talked about the life and work of PN Panicker and his message “Vayichu Valaruka” which means “Read and Grow.”

The programme was further continued by Ms. Chinar Chawla who was the moderator of the talk with Dr Gupta. The Book-talk proved to be a lively discussion on Indian tales and how they impart ethical and moral values. Dr Gupta talked about how Indian ethics and tales are guiding lights not just for students, but also teachers, parents, and even corporate professionals. She emphasized the need to bring about a self-reliance and discipline amongst youth to foster a healthy citizenship of sound mind and values. The talk was followed by a lively and interactive question answer session with the audience that made it a resounding success.

The event was concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks by Dr Gupreet Singh Sohal, Convener, Readers Club. The winners of the Online Essay Writing Competition were also announced – Parnoor Kaur, DMLT, GGDSD College, Chandigarh secured 1st position, Taya Sahota of BA I, GGDSD College, Chandigarh secured 2nd position, and Mansi Kandwal from BCOM, GGDSD College, Chandigarh secured 3rd position.
