World consumer rights Day is celebrated on March 15 every year to spread awareness regarding consumer rights. This year, consumers international has announced that the theme of world consumer rights day 2023 is empowering people through clean energy transitions
The Department of Food Supplies, Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology Chandigarh, in association with Bureau of Indian Standards, celebrated the World Consumer Rights Day & Manak Mahotsava Event in Shivalik View Hotel.

The function was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Shri, Rupesh Kumar, IDirector, Food and Supplies and Consumers Affairs and legal Metrology UT Chandigarh.
Shri Deepak Aggarwal, Senior Director & Head Chandigarh Branch Office of BIS welcomed the participants and apprised about the programme objectives and importance of Manak Mahotsav.

Shri Rajeev P., Deputy Director General (North) apprised the participants to actively participate in the various activities being undertaken by Bureau of Indian Standards under Manak Mahotsav and explained them about various BIS activities, features of BIS Care App, products under mandatory certification and consumer focus standards. He also apprised them of various features of BIS Care App to check the genuineness of ISI Mark, Hallmark and Registration Mark.

Sh. Rupesh Kumar, I.A.S., Director Consumer Affairs & Legal Metrology,Chandigarh apprised everyone about the consumer rights and initiatives taken by the UT adminstration for the benefit of consumers. Sh.Dharmvir I.A.S. Retired Chief Secretary, Haryana, Sh.Anant Sharma, Founder President, CCI, Rajasthan, Dr.Arun Kumar, Chairman, DRGSA, Er.P.S.Virdi, President Consumer Protection Federation, Mohali, Mrs.Bhawna Sahani, Vice Chairman, DRGSA, Punjab, Representatives of various Consumer Organizations of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttrakhand, Haryana,Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, J&K & Smt.Shikha Nijhawan, President of Resident Welfare Association, Chandigarh attended the programme.

Dr.Manoj Khosla, Joint Commissioner FSSAI, highlighted the significance of Consumer Awareness & Empowerment in Food & Beverages Sector.In Technical session, Sh.Ajay Maurya, Sc.D, delivered lecture on BIS –Empowering Consumers through Digitalization .The participants mainly consumers and members of consumer associations appreciated the program and described it as beneficial.

In a second event, a seminar was also organised by the Department of Food and supplies and consumer affairs and legal metrology UT Chandigarh in association with consumers Association, Chandigarh at Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management , Catering and nutrition, sector 42 Chandigarh. The theme of the seminar was empowering consumers through clean energy transition. The seminar was attended by the officials of the department and members of the consumers association , Chandigarh, along with students of the institute. The purpose of the seminar was to aware the consumers about their consumers rights and also to motivate them to choose options of clean energy.

The chief guest on the occasion was Mayor of Chandigarh Shri Anup Gupta and the seminar was also attended by guest of Honour Shri Rupesh Kumar IAS. Director of consumers affair UT, Chandigarh. The seminar started with Sh RK Kaplash welcoming all the participants.On the occasion, a lecture on clean environment and clean energy was delivered by Shri Sukhwinder Singh Project Director Crest, Chandigarh. A lecture on food safety was delivered by Shri Sukhwinder Singh Designated officer, Food Safety, UT Chandigarh. Advocate Madhu P Singh also delivered a lecture on salient features of consumer protection act, 2019. In the seminar, the department made aware the consumers about their rights and the remedies available to them under consumer protection act 2019 for unfair trade practises. The role of consumers in attaining clean energy transitions was also discussed. The seminar ended with the vote of thanks from the officials of the department.
