Seven-day Spoken Sanskrit camp begins at PU

Participants from various age groups and fields gathered to learn the classical language. Spoken Sanskrit camp jointly organised by PU’s Sanskrit department and Lok Bhasha Prachar Samiti Chandigarh began today.

Under the direction of DUI of the Panjab University, Professor Renu Vig, who is also Sanskrit department’s chairperson, this camp aims at teaching Sanskrit for formal and informal usage, to both the academic and non-academic audiences. This is a part of Sanskrit department’s long term goal of spreading Sanskrit literacy across various sections of our society.

From students of MA Sanskrit and other language departments, to retired professors of PU and HPU, all have gathered to learn one of the world’s most celebrated classical languages with a rich literature.

Professor V. K. Alankar, Academic Incharge, Sanskrit department said in his inaugural speech, “Sanskrit is one of the oldest languages in the world, and has a distinct style of pronunciation and structure, certain nuances of which will be taught in this camp.” Prof. Alankar also told the audience that such camps are organised every year to spread Sanskrit literacy and that in this camp also, participants shall learn at least the basic  level of Sanskrit. Vijay Bharadwaj, who is an instructor at this camp, introduced participants with the action plan of the camp. With the Vedic chants by Naresh Kumar, another instructor at the camp, the sacred lamp was lit by the teachers of the department, which marked the beginning of the event. This camp will be held upto 28th February, daily from 2 pm to 4 pm at PU’s Sanskrit department.
