A meeting was held today under the Chairmanship of W/Adviser to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh w.r.t. the development of 11 longitudinal green corridors for Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) in view of provisions of The Chandigarh Master Plan-2031. The presentation in this regard was made by the Department of Urban Planning, Chandigarh Administration. The meeting was attended by the Finance Secretary-cum-Secretary Urban Planning/Engineering, Chief Conservator of Forest, Deputy Commissioner, representatives of Municipal Corporation and Traffic Police. It was deliberated that use of non-Motorized Transport in the city needs to be strengthened taking into consideration the environmental considerations and segregation of vehicular & NMT traffic. The Chandigarh Master Plan 2031 strives to motivate the citizens of Chandigarh for using cycle as a preferred mode of transport. The use of bicycle is an energy conserving & healthier mode of transport for shorter distances and for reducing the car use and carbon emission in the city. The details of two corridors i.e. Corridor No.1 (along the Patiala Ki Rao) & Corridor No. 5 (along N-Choe) were discussed in detail. The approx. length of the corridor No.1 is 9km and for Corridor No.5 is 8 km. The Adviser to the Administrator directed to implement the project on priority in a phased manner for all the 11 vertical green corridors. The Engineering Department has to provide the technical feasibility of the said corridors in coordination with the Forest Department.

Engineering department was further directed to complete upgradation work of existing cycle tracks as quickly as possible.

With the provision of such green corridors the cyclists will feel safe as they will connect to their workspaces, shopping centers and residences. The special provisions are being made for pedestrians and cyclists in the city as per the original plan wherein the 7V road network was designed for safe movement of pedestrians and V8s were subsequently added as cycle tracks along major roads. The pedestrians and cycles were to move along city greens intercepting vehicular roads for seamless connectivity.
