University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized Photography Contest “ Biodiversity: A Screenshot” celebrating 75 years of freedom of Glorious India. The pandemic of COVID 19 has awakened many of us out of our slumber. The quarantine exercises were a reminder of how blind we have been towards the beauty around of the ecosphere we inhabit. This competition was a call for gathering a creative glimpse of the little ecosystems, habitats and undiscovered species that fill the colours of the places around us.
27 entries were received from various colleges of Chandigarh and departments of Panjab university: MCM DAV, Sector 36; Government College for Home Science, Sector 10; Government College, Sector 42;University Institute of Dental Sciences and University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, where each student tried to justify their amateur photography skill. The perspectives in photographs confirms the idea of International Biological Diversity Day, which is celebrated to acknowledge and awaken the citizens to the rainbows of denizens in the ecosystem.
An expert in the field of photography, Dr. Jessu Jaskanwar Singh from University School of Open Learning, examined the following three aspects of the 27 entries received: the justification of the flora or fauna theme, the aesthetics in the picture, and the composition or balance of colour contrasts in the photograph. Ms. Palki, a second semester B.Sc Fashion and Life Style Technology student, took first place, followed by Ms. Nidhi, MSc. -II semester and Ms. Sanjana, B.Sc -II semester Fashion and Life Style Technology students for second and third places, respectively. Aside from the three winning entries, the jury also announced consolation prize and certificate of appreciation to encourage the students’ talent: Ekjot Kaur from Home science college and Palak Batra from UIFT. The winning entries cover the locations of Sukhna lake, the Spring colors of trees in the Panjab university campus and some close ups of the flora and fauna in college campuses. Dr. Anu H. Gupta, UIFT & VD Chairperson, congratulated the winners on their imaginative depictions of the ecosystem. Ms. Harleen Kaur, Guest Faculty UIFT & VD, organised the event.
