National Voluntary Blood Donation Day

1st October 2021

Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh, India

National Voluntary Blood Donation Day 2021 brings a precious opportunity to encourage and motivate the people especially the youth to come forward voluntarily and donate blood and be a warrior in the fight against CORONA.

The day marks the opportunity to thank the blood donor for their life saving gift of blood and also to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure that all individuals and communities have access to affordable and timely supplies of safe and quality-assured blood and blood products, as an integral part of universal health coverage and a key component of effective health systems.

In line with the theme this year “give Blood and keep the world beating”, there is a month-long voluntary blood donation and motivational campaign being conducted by the department of transfusion medicine (Blood Centre) to motivate regular blood donors to continue giving blood, and to motivate people in good health who have never given blood to begin doing so, particularly young people.

As part of this campaign there were 3 voluntary blood donation and motivational drives conducted by the department simultaneously

  1. Blood donation centre of the PGI Chandigarh in association with the Thalassaemic Charitable Trust (Regd.)
  2. Bridge market of Sector 17 Chandigarh Sector 17 Chandigarh in association with the Kinner Kailash Mahasangh Charitable Trust (Regd.) & Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust (Regd.).
  3. The “Blood Mobile” was stationed near Neelam cinema Sector 17 Chandigarh in association with the Kinner Kailash Mahasangh Charitable Trust (Regd.) & Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust (Regd.).

All three events were graced as Chief Guest by Dr. Sukhsohit Singh, Indian Defence Accounts Services, currently the Joint Controller and Financial Advisor, Border Roads Organisation & General Reserve Engineer Forces at Pune.

The department pays homage to Late Professor Jai Gopal Jolly, the founder head of the department of Blood Transfusion at PGI Chandigarh. The event marks the birthday of Prof J G Jolly, who was pioneer of voluntary blood donation programme in the country.

A total of 180 donors donated blood on the day. The department conveyed sincere gratitude towards all the volunteer donors on the occasion as well as those donating all around the year.
