Street Vendor training on 23-08-2021
The Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER and Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh has joined hands for empowerment of vendors.
For this, a project “Capacity building, training and health promotion intervention package for empowerment of registered street vendors under DAY-NULM and Street Vendors Act in making Chandigarh a model street-vending” has been launched. The project has been developed under the patronage of Sh. K.K Yadav, Municipal Commissioner and Dr. Amarjeet Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER. It is an extension of the pilot project, which was successfully completed in March 2020. Under the current project, 100 workshops will be held to train 3000 vendors in one year.
These workshops impart trainings and ensure that Chandigarh-based street vendors comply with byelaws of Municipal Corporation, Street Vendors Act 2014, Swachh Bharat Campaign, Food Safety and Standard Regulation 2011 and Women and Child empowerment acts. The street vendors are enlightened about their rights and duties.
In addition, a new initiative on health assurance scheme for vendors and their families will be developed by PGIMER which will ensure basic health care coverage provision to street vendors and their families through various health centres run by Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER in Chandigarh.
Till now twenty workshops have been successfully conducted under this project. The 25th workshop of the project was held on 23th August, 2021 at City Livelihood Centre, Sector 25 D, Chandigarh from 10:30 am to 01:30 pm.
Twenty six street food vendors were trained during the workshop. The training sessions included a lecture on practical tips for safe food handling by Ms. Rajinder Kaur, Project Assistant, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The street vendors were also introduced to food adulterants and their harmful effects by Dr. Geeta Mehra, Assistant Professor, Food Science from MCM DAV College. Also, training on Food safety was undertaken by Mr. Vivek Kumar, Food Safety and Certification trainer.
Mr. JP Kant from Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management, Sector 42 briefed the street vendors about Hunar se rozgaar yojana, a skill training and employment scheme for food vendors and their families.
The workshop concluded with Vote of Thanks by Ms. Amandeep Kaur, Project Assistant followed by certificate distribution amongst the vendors.
