CGST Zone takes forward the mandate on Organ Donation

Organises Interactive Session in collaboration with ROTTO PGIMER & MOHAN Foundation

Chandigarh : August 23:As a part of AKAM Celebrations, CGST Zone Chandigarh took forward the mandate on  the noble cause of Organ Donationby organising an interactive session in collaboration with ROTTO (Regional Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization), PGIMER, Chandigarh and MOHAN (Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network) Foundationhere at C.R. Building, Sector 17 today.

Presided over by Mr. Suresh Kishnani, Chief Commissioner, CGST Zone Chandigarh the event witnessed an enthusiastic response with Pr. Commissioners/Commissioners and ADC/JC, of Commissionerate, based at Ludhiana/Jalandhar and all the Group ‘A’ officers and office bearers of the various Staff/officers Associations attending the session either physically or virtually.

ROTTO PGIMER was represented by Prof. Vipin Koushal, Addl. Medical Superintendent cum Nodal Officer,ROTTO PGIMER and Ms Saryu D. Madra, Consultant (IEC/Media), ROTTO PGIMER. Ms Bhawna Jagwani, Trustee, MOHAN Foundation Jaipur was present on behalf of MOHAN Foundation.

Addressing the delegates, Mr. Suresh Kishnani, Chief Commissioner, CGST Zone Chandigarh stated, “The act of pledging organs during one’s lifetime is the most appreciable deed one can do. It’s a win-win situation where one does not have to lose anything but only to gain by continuing living in others beyond his/her mortal journey.”

Being fairly clued about the concept of Organ Donation, Mr Kishnani demystified many mythspertaining to Organ Donation as he said,“Organ Donation is, in fact, reiteration of value of compassion only  as its giving someone a second chance to live and there cannot be anything more altruistic than the ‘gift of life’.”

Endorsing the need for top driven initiatives to promote engagement towards the cause, Mr. Kishnani urged the top brass of CGST Zone to pledge themselves for organ donation and take it forward with their organisations as well. “The cause calls for an integrated and sustained effort on part of us,. Govt. Officers, to set a role model and create a culture of voluntary deceased organ donation,”

Leading from the front by pledging for Organ Donation himself, Mr. Kishnani also proposed the idea of more robust system to facilitate the consenting process of Organ Donation.

Commending the social responsibility endeavour of CGST Zone Chandigarh, Prof. Vipin Koushal, Addl. Medical Superintendent cum Nodal Officer, ROTTO PGIMER stated, “Its heartening to see apex institutions like CGST joining hands and committing to take forward the campaign to its multiple branches. This initiative of CGST will definitely help us garner enough traction for the cause with the larger sections of the society and help saving precious lives.”

Prof. Vipin Koushal deliberated on the initiatives being undertaken by ROTTO PGIMER to promote Organ Donation and emphasized that the solution to organ shortage is possible only through systematic strengthening of the deceased donor programme. “We don’t ever want someone else to suffer a loss in their family but if it does happen it’d be magnanimous on their part to give a second lease of life to someone else in their passing.”

Ms Bhawna Jagwani, Trustee Mohan Foundation Jaipur, underpinned, “Considering the fact that organ donation is less, not because there are no potential donors but because the potential donors do not convert into actual donors due to the lack of knowledge, awareness and socio-cultural views.”

“With waiting list getting longer, the gap between organ demand and availability increasing  at a rapid pace and helpless patients dying every day while waiting for a transplant, it is vital that more and more of us join this noble cause.” Ms. Jagwani added

Earlier setting the tone of the session, Mr. Rajan Datt, Additional Commissioner said “Nothing can be more self-less than truly giving those in need, a ray of hope and more precisely, a second chance to live. So the session was conceived with intent to build up focus on this altruistic cause of organ donation by engaging with top leadership from CGST Zone to help boosting the pledge and thereby, help saving precious lives.”

Concluding the session, Mr. Mankiran, Deputy Commissioner, CGST Chandigarh expressed his gratitude towards ROTTO PGIMER and MOHAN Foundation for supporting their social responsibility endeavour and assured of the CGST Zone’s commitment to take forward the awareness campaign, thereby connecting and sensitizing a large base of employees.

The session witnessed showcasing of a motivational documentary on the success story of a liver recipient in PGIMER which left many in the hall with moist eyes. Another highpoint of the event was a very engaging and interesting QA session.

Commemorating the spirit, paintings were gifted to Mr. Suresh Kishnani and other dignitaries as a token to reiterate the fact that ‘circle of life’ should not break. These paintings were made by school students on the theme of Organ Donation under ROTTO PGIMER’s school engagement programme.
