Chandigarh.9th April,2021:Eat Right Campus initiative led by Food Safety & Standards Authority of India, New Delhi aims to promote safe, healthy and sustainable food in campuses such as Universities, Colleges, Hospitals, Jail premises etc across the Country. The objective is to improve health of people and to promote social and economic development of Country. Eat Right India aims to transform India’s food safety and nutritious environment through a judicious mix of regulatory, capacity building, collaborative and enforcement approaches, thereby protecting and advancing public health and improve the quality of life across all walk of life. As a part of Eat Right India, the Eat Right Campus initiative has been launched for Institutions, Hospitals, Jails etc to support them to ensure safe healthy and sustainable food for the people who spent majority their time in these campuses.
FSSAI has created a bench mark on four different parameters on which the campuses are evaluated and certified as Eat Right Campuses. These parameters include food safety measures, step to ensure provision of healthy and environmentally sustainable food and building awareness among individuals in the campus to make the right food choices. A detailed checklist has been created based on these parameters outlining the best practices to be followed by the campus. These practices include mandatory steps as licensing of food services in the campus and compliance of food safety and hygiene standards as per Food Safety Act.
The Department of Food Safety & Standards UT Chandigarh with Model Jail authorities enrolled the Model Jail Chandigarh Campus in the said programme, a joint team of Food Safety Department, U.T Chandigarh with Jail authorities conducted pre assessment of food safety & hygiene of the campus and identified the gaps and area of improvement. The Jail Administration took the steps to address these gaps. Training under the Food Safety Programme provided to the inmates working in the kitchen and canteen area, thereafter audit was conducted by the FSSAI empanelled third party Auditing agency and the report of the same was forwarded to FSSAI, GOI for final outcome. The Model Jail Chandigarh on the basis of audit has been declared as India’s first Eat Right Jail Campus.
