Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health, PGIMER and Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh jointly organized the Eighth capacity building and training workshop at City livelihood Centre, Community Sewa Kendra, Sector 25D, Chandigarh from 10:30am to 12:30pm.
Fifteen registered street food vendors were trained during the workshop. The training sessions were delivered by experts from various fields to encourage street vendors and ensure that the vendors conform to Food Safety and Standard Regulations, 2011.
Dr. Poonam Khanna, Associate Professor, PGIMER, Chandigarh welcomed all the guests and the vendors. She briefed the vendors about the purpose of the training. Mr. Sukhwinder Singh, Designated Officer, Food Safety Standard Cell, U.T. Chandigarh introduced the concept of food safety training and certification to the vendors. He also emphasized on the importance of FSSAI certification and licensing. The food vendors were given food safety training by Mr. Vivek Kumar, FOSTAC trainer. The food testing van was also shown to the vendors and its briefing was done by Mr. Sukhwinder Singh.
Dr. Geeta Mehra, Assistant Professor, Food Science, MCM-DAV, Chandigarh enlightened the food vendors on food adulteration related issues in street food vending. Practical tips for street vendors in implementing food safety were given by Mr. JP Kant from Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management, Sector 42. He also briefed the street vendors about Hunar se rozgaar yojana, a skill training and employment scheme for food vendors and their families.
The workshop concluded with distribution of certificates to vendors and a post-test conducted by the project team.
