International NCD Courses with a difference starting at PGI followed by an International CME
Chandigarh 01st March: PGIMER, Chandigarh is conducting the 6th International course on Public health approaches to Non Communicable Diseases from 2-6th March that will be followed by the 6th International CME on 7th March, which is celebrated as Foundation day of World NCD Federation, on the theme “Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses for Evidence-Based Prevention and Control in NCDs” in collaboration with World NCD Federation, AIIMS, New Delhi, WHO and Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine.
The course has already completed five editions at International, regional and national level, this current 6th edition is being undertaken virtually for the first time at international level. Till date about 260 participants which includes Programme managers at state and district level, faculty from Medical colleges, postgraduate community medicine students, and public health professionals from almost every state of India and different regions of the world have been trained in these courses. Considering COVID-19 pandemic situation, the course will be conducted in virtual mode.
The course will be inaugurated on March 2nd by the Ms Vandana Gurnani, Additional Secretary & Mission director of NHM, Ministry of Health & Family welfare, Government of India, in the presence of Prof GD Puri, Dean, PGIMER, Dr GB Singh, Director Health Services, Punjab, Ms Payden, Deputy WHO representative to India, Dr Shekhar Potkar, Viatris,
The experts for delivering the course are from across the globe with Dr Brian Oldenburg, Australia, Dr. Rajiv Saran, USA, Dr. Arun Chockalingam, Canada, Dr. Rohina Joshi, from Australia. A total of about 110 participants including 6 international professionals from countries like Mauritius, Nepal and many state nodal officers of NCDs from the states across the country are participating. The nominations included Additional directors, state program officers and district program officers in the NCD program. Apart from these managerial professionals, public health experts and students from various states have also registered for this course.
The course consists of 9 modules focussing on the burden of NCDs, Global and national initiatives and public health interventions to tackle NCDs, multi-sectoral involvement in NCD management, health system strengthening, emerging NCDs, monitoring and surveillance, building robust national NCD programs and implementation research in NCDs. It will be delivered through lectures and live interactions with the faculty. Keynote speakers from across the world are invited to deliver their expertise in the NCD management. Four Live panel discussions on the cutting edge topics in NCDs have also been embedded in the course. As a social responsibility of the organizers of the course towards the tricity and City Beautiful of Chandigarh, a Public forum on the title “Weight Management Strategy is Calling you. Are you listening? on 6th March from 3-4pm. Cycle Rally with Social distancing is also being organized on 7th March from 6-7 AM to promote physical activity despite ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and encouraging interaction of the general public with CME participants and speakers.
The course will help the participants to achieve a) an effective implementation of National NCD Programs by Program Managers; b) Improved teaching of NCDs in the medical colleges by junior faculty and; c) Increase in implementation research capacity on NCDs among faculty, Postgraduate MD and students and Public professionals. There is an overwhelming response to International CME on Evidence based medicine and public health which is attended by about 300 participants from across the world, and will be inaugurated by Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER in the presence of Prof Amarjeet Singh, Chair, IAPSMCON 2021. Prof Sanjay Zodpey Director, Indian Institute of Public Health, Gurugram will be keynote speaker and will be speaking on Multi Sectoral participation for Evidence based public health for NCDs. Prof CS Pandav who has been awarded India’ fourth highest Civilian award, Padma Shri, will also be speaking in the function. The speakers in the CMEs will focus on the promotion of evidence based medicine and public by means of systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
