UIPS PAYS TRIBUTES TO THE PHARMA LEGEND

Chandigarh,sunitashastri:University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a Webinar “Pharmacy Education: Responding to NEP 2020” on 24th November in remembrance of The Pharma Legend- Padma Shri Awardee (2017) Late Professor Harkishan Singh (25 Nov 1928- 20 March 2020), whose birthday falls on 25th November. Prof. Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS shared the reminiscences of the glorious life journey of Professor Harkishan Singh, a globally renowned pharmaceutical scientist and a science historian who is credited with the discovery of a neuromuscular drug, Chandonium Iodide.Professor Suresh Bhojraj, Pro-Chancellor JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru & President, Pharmacy Council of India (4 consecutive terms since 2003) dedicated his talk to Pharma Jewel, Late Professor Harkishan Singh. He enlightened about the objectives of Pharmacy Act 1948; PCI regulations since 2003 and apprised of how PCI brings regulation of Pharmacy education of all levels under its ambit. Prof Suresh then shed light on how the New Education Policy 2020 will make the universities research intensive, teaching intensive and will open options to run distance learning and online programs. He emphasised that healthcare education needs to be integrative with a greater emphasis on preventive healthcare and community medicine in all forms of education. He further reiterated that there are lot of challenges in achieving the new vision of Pharmacy Education as per National Education Policy which can only be addressed by progressive policies and sustainable practices. PCI’s new strategy for impactful pharmacy education includes curricular revision, quality assurance, pharmacist workforce & technology integration. He proposed future directions and a timeline for bringing major reforms in pharmacy education and profession in India; starting from the period 2018-2023 being the period of quality assurance and advancement; 2023-2028 (the period of recognition and respect) and 2028-2032 being the era where the pharmacists will become the integral and respected member of the healthcare team and will drive the healthcare of the country. The discussion on how pharmacy education will be influenced by NEP was addressed for the first time in the talk.Eminent Pharma Professionals including Prof S. K. Kulkarni, Former DUI & Professor Emeritus, Panjab University; Prof V. R Sinha, Dean Research, Panjab University; Dr Alka Mukne, Faculty, Bombay College of Pharmacy and the Editor- Pharma Times, the monthly news magazine of Indian Pharmaceutical Association; Dr R N. Gupta, Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, BIT Mesra; Dr Amarjit Singh, an eminent industrialist; Prof T R Bhardawaj, Vice Chancellor Baddi University; Prof. Saranjit Singh, NIPER, Mohali, shared their valuable and insightful views on National education Policy 2020.Around 280 participants joined the webinar and included students, researchers, UIPS faculty.
