CELEBRATIONS OF WORLD OZONE DAY 2020

Chandigarh: 16th September 2020: Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee in association with Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration celebrated the World Ozone Day ,today by organizing series of programmes with the involvement of various stakeholders. An oath was taken by all the officers/officials of the Paryavaran Bhawan to contribute their efforts in helping curtail the air pollution levels of the city.

A webinar was organised with the theme of Air Pollution, Climate Change and Ozone Depletion by Department of Environment. In the inaugural address Sh. Debendra Dalai, Director Environment threw some light on “Ozone for Life” and on the Importance of the celebration of World Ozone Day and this year’s theme i.e. 35 years of Ozone Layer Protection. He appreciated the efforts made by different government as well as individual’s to curtail Ozone depleting substances.

Thereafter, a presentation was made by Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor of Environment Health, School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh. He covered the impact of lockdown on the air quality of Chandigarh, effects of ultra violet radiations on the flaura and fauna, about the ozone depletion substances and various steps taken by Chandigarh Administration under National Clean Air Programme which includes making cycle tracks, construction and demolition waste processing plant, enhancing green cover etc.

In this series various online poster and small video making competitions for school and college students were organised on the theme of this year’s Ozone Day theme by the Environment Department.

At the end of the webinar a short documentary film released by United Nations was also shown to the participants with an aim to make them sensitise toward the goal of World Ozone Day.
