Chandigarh : September 12 : To celebrate and support Poshan Mah, IAMBSS in association with Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, IDA, NSI and NHM Haryana, organized a webinar on “Future Readiness for Nutrition Security through micronutrient delivery”. Experts from diverse fields shared their insights on micronutrient delivery, food security, food fortification and underlined the importance of elimination of malnutrition through effective strategies and interventions.
While inaugurating the session Dr Amarjeet Singh, Prof. & Head (DCM& SPH) PGIMER stressed on the need for consumption of locally available food for healthy life. Dr Arun K Aggarwal, Prof. (DCM& SPH) PGIMER, highlighted the need of food security, dietary diversity, fortification and vocal for local nutrition to secure India.
Briefing about the micronutrient deficiencies Dr Poonam Khanna stressed on using integrated approaches to prevent malnutrition, she emphasized that experts from different sectors like agriculture, Food industry, public health, research and social welfare should join hands to shape-up a nutrition secure nation.
Speaking about various schemes for farmers, Dr Vivek Shankar (ADO),Directorate of Agriculture, Punjab also highlighted bio fortification and value addition as tools of nutrition security.
Expert Dr Satish B Agnihotri (Emeritus Professor, IIT Bombay)drew attention to regional mapping of malnutrition and addressing malnutrition in absolute numbers while planning and implementing interventions.
Recipient of Global Nutrition Leadership Award, and “Nutrition Man” of India, Dr Basant K Kar underlined the importance of convergence in nutrition transformation and initiatives likeGround water iron initiative and turning AWC to centre of excellence for realising nutrition for all.
Further, Dr Sumit Arora (FFRC expert and Principal Scientist,NDRI, Karnal) shared his insights about challenges in mineral fortification of milk and need of strict regulations on fortified dairy products
National President IDA, Dr Jagmeet Madan spoke about engaging, enticing and emphasizing communities for behaviour change communication for tackling the nutritional problems.
Concluding the session Dr Virendra Ahlawat (Program Officer,NHM, Haryana) highlighted 6 by 6 approach in achievingAnaemia Mukt Haryana and stressed on importance of deworming campaigns and compliance to consumption of IFA tablets for making Haryana anemia free.
