Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh has been recognized as ‘Centre of Excellence on air Pollution and Health’ under National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH) by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi.
Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor of Environmental Health, Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh, is the nodal faculty for the ‘Centre of Excellence on air Pollution and Health’. He highlighted that we have already developed a health adaptation plan to build the capacity of each state and will soon start their training to minimize the health impact of air pollution and climate change. He added that the self-explanatory training module and awareness material will be released soon.
Prof. Amarjeet Singh, Head, Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh, mentioned that the department is working over three years for the implementation of the National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health. Recognition of the Institution as Centre of Excellence will motivate to speed up the work on Air Pollution and Health issues in the context of climate change in the country.
Prof. Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh, congratulated the Department and Nodal Faculty Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal for the developing the health adaptation plan on air pollution and climate change and mentioned that all necessary support will be provided to support ‘Centre of Excellence on air Pollution and Health’ to build the capacity of healthcare personnel in the country. He also stated that the awareness material developed by the department is innovative and will empower and engage individuals and societies from awareness to action.
The Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh is actively engaged in air quality research in India, and they are vocal about the local air quality issues and working with global partners for affordable and sustainable solutions for clean air, better health, and environment.
