Chandigarh, 26 October. The second phase of block level quiz competition on road safety is being organized on October 27 with the aim of enhancing driving skills among all the drivers including students of the state and creating awareness about following traffic rules. The students of schools and colleges are showing great enthusiasm about this competition and are working hard to prepare for it.

Director General of Police, Mr. Shatrujeet Kapur said that students are the most powerful medium in creating awareness about road safety and traffic rules. He said that students of schools and colleges are the best teachers. Through this quiz competition, students will not only become aware about road safety but will also share important information regarding following traffic rules with their parents. He said that road safety is a serious matter and due to lack of knowledge about safe driving, many times people become victims of road accidents. He said that road safety depends on three factors: driver, vehicle and quality of roads, out of which the role of the driver is the most important. Lack of driving skills is the main cause of road accidents. It is very important to create awareness among the general public about this.
He said that through this competition, efforts are being made to make young drivers more aware, responsible and sensitive towards road safety and traffic rules so that good habits can be developed in them. He said that through this competition, the aim is to sow the seeds of road safety in the minds of the students of schools and colleges from the very beginning so that in future they play the role of a responsible citizen and follow the traffic rules.
Students shared their experiences in different ways regarding organizing this competition. Lavanya Kashanwal, a class 10 student of Our Lady of Fatima Convent Secondary School, Gurugram district, who was preparing for the road safety quiz competition, said that after participating in this competition, she got many important information related to road safety. Lavanya told that she came to know about many warning signs including driving license, following traffic rules, traffic signs, reflector tape, seat belts and airbags, traffic signs, indicators and road signs etc.

Similarly, Rishan Sharma of 7th class told that through the study material provided for this competition, he was taught by the traffic police about hand signals, flashing red and yellow lights, pedestrian crossing indicators, proper distance between vehicles, lanes. Driving, speed limit, violating speed limit, dangerous driving, helmet and duty of a driver at the time of accident etc. were explored in detail. Similarly, Class 5 student Mishika Mittal said that the curriculum provided for the competition gave her important information about road safety system, right of way, crossing of vehicles at intersections and many other important information.

It is noteworthy that on October 13, this competition was organized at the school level in which more than 42 lakh students participated and gave the message of road safety. After this, the second phase of this competition is now being organized at the block level on 27th October. After the block level, this competition will be organized at the district level, range level and state level. Under this competition organized in the year 2016-17, more than 44 lakh students participated and got their names registered in the Limca Book of World Records. He told that the students securing first, second and third positions in this competition will participate in the district level competition.
