The Department of Art History and Visual Arts, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised an exhibition titled ‘Beyond Traditions: Pluralism in Modern Indian Art’ on the 27th of September in the Fine Arts Museum, Panjab University. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr Neeru Malik, Dean, Faculty of Design and Fine Arts. The students of the department curated the exhibition in which prints, sculptures and paintings from the collection of the museum were chosen for display.
This is the second such exhibition curated by the students, the first one was organised in March 2023 on the occasion of Women’s Day. The displayed works are of nineteen artists associated with Baroda, especially focusing on their works from 1970’s onwards. These works showcase the development and trends of contemporary art in India during the time. Some of the prominent artist on display are- K G Subramanyan, Nasreen Mohammedi, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Balbir Katt, Jayant Parikh, Nilima Sheikh, DLN Reddy, Dhruva Mistry, Bhupen Khakhar, and Vivan Sundaram among others. This exhibition is a rare treat for the art lovers of the tri-city as the student have combined visuals with text explaining the artworks on display.
The text can be accessed through QR code by the visitors on their mobile phones. The written information will lead to a better understanding of the artwork as well as the style of the particular artist. Such activities are organised to give particle experience to the students who will assume the role of future curators, art historian, art journalist and scholars. The exhibition will be on display till 4th October 2023, from 9 am to 5 pm on working days.
