A press conference was organized at Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar today on the occasion of three years of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The conference was graced by esteemed dignitaries from prominent institutions including NIT Jalandhar, IIM Amritsar, IIT Ropar, AIIMS Bathinda, and Central University of Punjab. The conference brought together these eminent personalities, who are at the forefront of education and academia, to discuss the successful implementation of the groundbreaking National Education Policy.
The central focus of the press conference was to shed light on the progressive measures undertaken in the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to revolutionize India’s education landscape and foster holistic development among students.
At the conference, Sh. Rajinder Chaudhry, Additional Director General, Press Information Bureau (PIB), Chandigarh stated that the National Education Policy 2020 has laid the foundation for a transformative educational ecosystem that is student-centric and empowers learners to develop essential 21st-century skills. He emphasized the integration of technology and modern teaching methodologies to make education more accessible and inclusive. “NEP aims for universalization of education with 100% Gross enrollment ratio(GER)”, he added.
Dr. Binod Kumar Kanojia, Director of NIT Jalandhar, reiterated the institute’s commitment to aligning its curriculum with the NEP’s vision of promoting interdisciplinary education and research-oriented learning. He highlighted that the policy’s emphasis on promoting research and innovation will create a pool of skilled individuals who can address real-world challenges effectively.
Dr. Nagarajan Ramamoorthy, Director of IIM Amritsar, emphasized that NEP 2020 aims to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among students, encouraging them to become job creators rather than just job seekers. He stated that he believes this will lead to the creation of a self-reliant and sustainable economy for the nation.
Prof. R. P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Punjab, stated that the NEP envisions strengthening the educational infrastructure in India and expanding the reach of quality education to all corners of the country. He emphasized that this will create a vibrant and knowledgeable society that can contribute effectively to India’s growth. “Through the National Education Policy, we envision fortifying India’s educational infrastructure and extending the horizon of quality education to every nook and cranny of our nation. A vibrant and knowledgeable society, thus empowered, will undoubtedly steer India towards remarkable growth and prosperity”, he added.
Associate Dean for Postgraduate Studies, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Maurya added that there have been several interdisciplinary PG programs started recently at IIT Ropar. For example, the MSc program in Data Scienc & Management has been started this year in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Amritsar. A joint PhD degree has also been started in collaboration with IIT Mandi. An MTech program in Computational Mechanics is also a multidisciplinary program started by the Mechanical engineering department.
Prof. (Dr.) Akhilesh Pathak, Dean and officiating Director of AIIMS Bathinda, remarked that the NEP 2020 has paved the way for the integration of medical education with the larger education framework, promoting an interdisciplinary approach to healthcare. He believes this will result in producing well-rounded medical professionals with a broader understanding of societal and health-related challenges.
The press conference served as a platform for the panel to highlight the progress made so far in the implementation of NEP 2020 and the collective efforts put forth by various educational institutions in achieving its objectives. With the united commitment of the academic community, policymakers, and stakeholders, the National Education Policy is poised to create a dynamic, skill-driven, and globally competitive education system.
