Spurred on by the universal female suffrage, International Women’s Day (IWD) was conceptualized way-back in 19th Century and is celebrated annually worldwide on March 8 as a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, violence and abuse against women. It has been commemorated annually by the UN and much of the world, with each year’s observance centered on a particular theme or issue within women’s rights.

Sports Department, Chandigarh celebrated the same on 13.03.2023 as March 8th 2023 was Holi Festival.
To commemorate the International Women’s Day, the Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration organized a Yoga session in the early morning at Hockey Ground, Spots Complex, Sector – 42, Chandigarh in which approximately 300 sports girls from various coaching centres of Sports Department attended the yoga session under the coaching / teaching of yoga experts. The sports girls learnt the basic yoga asana and pranayam from team of Yoga experts, headed by Dr. Anupama, Sr. Yoga Lecturer of Govt. Yoga College, Sector – 23, Chandigarh, yoga is a wonderful form of philosophy and way of life which teaches assimilation of body, mind and soul that is based on foundation of discipline in diet, behavior and attitude and the yoga asanas and pranyam is a fantastic form of exercise for physical and mental well being and physical, physiological and physiological fitness. The participating sports girls carried the message from this session to imbibe yoga in their sports training and beyond as a lifestyle for lifelong.
Ms. Nitika Pawar, IAS, Secretary Personnel, Social Welfare and Women & Child Development, Chandigarh Administration was the Chief Guest at the occasion and was welcomed by Sh. Sorabh Kumar Arora, Director Sports, Chandigarh Administration. Sh. Dharmender Mehta, District Sports Officer as well as Coaches and other staff of Sports Department were also present at the event. Ms. Nitika Pawar, cracked Civil Services Examination in 2012 in her first attempt after accomplishing her Bachelor of Engineering and she was a great source of inspiration for the gathered sports girls to excel in academics, sports and in all their dream careers to significantly acknowledge gender equality and prove their caliber in all aspects of life.
To mark the International Women’s Day, friendly matches were organized in the evening, for all the sports disciplines, at their respective sports centers of Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration.
