Thoughts on World Cancer Day 2022
Every year, on 4th of February, we observe World Cancer Day and then life goes on as usual. The purpose of observing this day is to raise awareness among public, inspire action and motivate reforms. In the past, we have tried to engage public attention and encourage interactions through exhibitions and roadshows but the ongoing pandemic has been a major deterrent for such efforts. The Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology at the Tertiary Cancer Care Centre of PGIMER, Chandigarh have put up posters to raise awareness among people who are visiting the hospital for various reasons. It would be pertinent to mention that the department never discontinued physical OPDs during the pandemic.
This year’s theme is “Close the Care Gap” and the department has tried in every way to do this throughout the pandemic. The gap in cancer care arises from lack of awareness, accessibility, affordability and availability of resources. PGIMER is a centre for excellent cancer care in the public sector catering to patients coming from the surrounding states and beyond. The cost of treatment is nominal with multiple beneficiary schemes for those who need financial support. Insurance schemes from the government and private grants give patients access to world class treatment facility without associated financial toxicity. By raising awareness and inspiring action, we hope to motivate further reforms in future and help achieve Universal Health Care for our patients.
