The Gender Champions Club of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College in association with the Chandigarh Police Department (Women and Child Development) celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child today. Ms. Palak Goel, DSP Traffic, with additional charge of PCC and DCHG was the chief guest on the occasion along with several other guest speakers.
Addressing the audience, Ms. Goel said, “We need to empower women every single day. As women, we must empower ourselves and also support each other. One witnesses that families in urban areas are supportive towards their women. This should also percolate to the grassroots. ” Further, Ms. Parvesh Sharma, SHO, Women Police Station in Sector 17, highlighted various provisions for juveniles and women by the Chandigarh administration.
Dr. Naresh Anand, Psychologist and Social Worker, State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, talked about the legal services provided to women by the authorities. “The Legal services Authority Act has many provisions for the common person. Any needy person including women can write a simple application and ask for help and consultation.”
Ms. Prabhjot Kaur, State Co-ordinator, Department of Social Welfare, Chandigarh administration, explained, “There was a time when we had warriors like Rani Lakshmibai but things have changed greatly in the present time. Girls are not safe both inside and outside their homes. Respect for girls and women has to begin at home.”
Ms. Namisha from Divine Education NGO talked about the rights and opportunities for the girl child while Mr. Bhupinder Singh, ASI, Chandigarh Police presented entertaining songs highlighting importance of following traffic rules.
A plantation drive was also held to mark the occasion. In the end, self-defence tactics were demonstrated by the Police team to the girl students.
Sh. Upkar K. Sharma, President GGDSD College Society, Dr. Anirudh Joshi, General Secretary of the Society and Mr. Jatinder Bhatia, Finance Secretary of the Society graced the occasion with their honourable presence. Dr. Ajay Sharma, Principal of the college, thanked the entire team for conducting a successful event, “Today’s event is a small step towards achieving the greater goal of gender equality and women empowerment.”
