“Ropar’s Donor Family immortalises their Son with his Organ Donation
Enables New Life to 2, Restores Sight for 2 More, Impacting 4 lives in all at PGIMER
Makes the observance of World Organ Donation Day all the more relevant today
Chandigarh : 13th August : “The basic premise of observing World Organ Donation Day every year is to motivate people to join the cause and pledge for Organ Donation. Nothing can be more motivational on this day than actually saving lives through organ donation. The indomitable spirit and generous gesture of organ donation by a brave-heart family from Ropar, Punjab has not only immortalised their dear one by enabling him re-live in four others but made the observance of also gave a whole new perspective to the observance of World Organ Donation Day all the more relevant today,” stated Prof. (Dr.) Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER while commending the magnanimous gesture of donor family of Ajayesh Kumar here at PGIMER today.
“It was a very tough call but still we felt it was the right call,” stated Ram Bachan, the grief-stricken but gritty father of deceased Ajayesh Kumar, after consenting for organ donation when he was declared brain dead following the protocols of THOA. “In fact, Organ Donation affirmed for us that saying ‘no’ would mean denying other people the chance for life and making their families undergo the same unbearable pain which we are confronted with after losing our son in his prime. Who would know more than us what it means and how it hurts. So we had to say ‘yes’ to Organ Donation,” reiterated Ram Bachan.
Good natured and ever energetic Ajayesh Kumar, 35 years, from Power Colony, Ropar, Punjab, was admitted to PGIMER following a fatal road accident on 23rd July. Since then, it has been a battle between life and death for Ajayesh Kumar though neither the family nor the attending medical team left any stone unturned to save him. But as was destined, Ajayesh Kumar’s condition became irretrievable on 9th August. Assessing this, PGIMER’s internal committee, after meeting twice, found the parameters matching brain death and eventually, Ajayesh Kumar was declared brain dead on the evening of 9th August itself.
In the meantime, transplant coordinators at the PGIMER apprised the deceased’s relatives of prospects of utilizing his organs through donation for transplants to terminally ill organ failure patients. With the deceased’s wife Sushma and father Ram Bachan consenting to the proposal of Organ Donation, the concerned departments started reaching out to the matching recipients. Finally, the cross match of several potential recipients led to the identification of matching recipients for kidneys and pancreas here in PGIMER.
Detailing about the latest cadaver organ donation,, Prof. Vipin Koushal, Addl. Medical Superintendent & Nodal Officer, ROTTO PGIMER recounted,”The kidneys and pancreas harvested from the deceased enabled second lease of life to two patients battling for survival here in PGIMER through the transplantation of kidney and simultaneous pancreas and kidney respectively. The retrieved corneas restored the sight of two corneal blind patients, impacting the life of 4 patients in all. I earnestly hope that the donor family’s self less gesture inspires more people to say ‘yes’ to Organ Donation and help saving those dying waiting for a transplant.”
Sushma, the courageous wife of donor Ajayesh Kumar, who immortalised her husband through the noble act of organ donation, shared her sentiments, “My husband was so caring that attributes like others before self and sacrifice were virtually his second nature. Compassion and helping others was the core of his being. So organ donation has been the extension of his generous spirit only. With this final act, the good has come full circle.”
